Hulusi - arguably the easiest instrument in Chinese Music, intrigues many people. A few simple notes, and yet the charm of the drone and the tone is unmistakable.
By using denser materials for the gourd, the resistance to pressure is greater, and hence, one is able to greatly increase the dynamic range of the instrument. Using Black Sandalwood, the Hulusi would have reached its peak in dynamic range. Modern bands using hulusi will use this model as its penetrating power is mostly unmatched.
